Nelscott Reef Big Wave Invitational Gets Green Light!

North Americas only big wave tow in surfing contest has received the green light from contest director John Forse.  John made the decision only two hours ago.  Al and Cotty are currently scrambling to arrange flights to Oregon to compete Sunday.  They will join a field other international big wave surf stars.  The event will showcase both disciplines of big wave surfing as the best big wave riders in the world battle it out for first place at this prestigious event.  The surf forcast promises wave faces in the 35 ft range with a 20second period and offshore winds.  Both Al and Cotty are exstatic about the call being made.  The event has been on standby since October and is entering the final four weeks of its waiting period.  Al said “I’m glad it got called today!”  Both Cotty and I have been working toward this event ever since John invited us.  That is the difficult thing about big wave surfing, you never really know when a big swell is going to hit until a few days in advance so all of us must stay in shape throughout the year so we are prepared for when it does arrive.”

The event is scheduled for sunday 30 November at Nelscott Reef, Lincoln City, Oregon.

Al and Cotty finish Tenth at APT World Tow in Surfing Championships, Pichilemu, Chile

Al and Cotty have recently returned from the APT event in chile where they finished tenth.  The big wave pair are pleased with their result.  Al said “it’s significant for us because we come from a nation that was never expected to have waves or surfers of a world standard, yet we have finished tenth in an event with competitors from places like Hawaii, California and Brazil”.  The APT event helps ligitimise big wave surfers in the eyes of onlookers.  People see what big wave riders do and think of them as madmen but they are highly trained athletes and experienced watermen.  Al and Cotty have now got their sights set on Nelscott Reef, Oregon,  where north Americas only tow in surfing event will take place with a similar list of invitees as the Chile comp.
