One Step Forward
So, there is a big one coming, Cotty glances back at me as if to say, "You want it?" I nodded in response, as I was closely watching the wave line up and stack on the reef.
here was no doubt about it - we were deep and it was a big one. I tried to lean out to the right off the wake from the ski to allow myself to swing off the rope before letting go.
Cotty ended up driving the ski on to the peak of the wave. The peak is right where I needed to be. I was too far back and I had no way of getting into the wave. The rope went slack as Cotty killed the throttle in an attempt to let the ski drift over the back of the wave. It was too late.
The peak of the wave that Cotty was on turned into the lip of the wave and lifted both Cotty and the ski! I dropped the rope and watched as the 30-foot beast swallowed my tow partner and jet ski. The last thing I saw was Cotty sitting on the ski and then disappearing out of view. The rope handle that I had just let go of got sucked from in front of me like a shark's tail through water. Thank goodness I wasn't holding on to it!
I watched as the huge back of the wave ploughed over the reef, taking them with it. The rest of the set was still coming: in fact, the next wave was even bigger! I was now floating on my tow board with my impact vest on as what looked like a 40-footer began to close in on me...
